Lifelover - Sjukdom (2011)

Il ne faut parfois guère plus qu’un mauvais concert pour qu’un musicien perde une bonne part de son crédit, de son aura aux yeux du public. En livrant avec son pourtant magnifique Hypothermia, une performance chiante comme un dimanche pluvieux lors du Forlorn Fest qui s’est ténu en Suède en novembre 2010, Kim Carlsson a montré qu'il était un homme faillible. Celui qu’on auréolait jusque là d’un talent quasi divin et ce, quelque soit le projet, a démontré ce soir-là ses limites. 

Le premier album a faire les frais de cette révélation est Sjukdom, quatrième (et finalement dernière) ode de Lifelover, que le Suédois anime avec le dénommé (et désormais regretté) "B" (Ondskapt, IXXI) et quelques autres musiciens plus interchangeables. Entité vénérée pour Pulver (2006) et Erotik (2007), le groupe avait réellement commencé à se détacher du terreau Black Metal de ses (récents) débuts avec Konkurs en incorporant de plus en plus d’éléments Rock quand bien même la musique a conservé le suaire dépressif dont elle a toujours été prisonnière. 

Deux ans après ce dernier opus, Sjukdom n’apporte malheureusement pas grand de chose de plus et déçoit quelque peu. Et l’échec d’Hypothermia décrit plus haut n’est en fait pour rien dans cette impression. La satisfaction de celui qui a découvert un trésor inconnu de tous, ce qui était le cas pour tous ceux s’étant abîmés dans les méandres des deux premières œuvres séminales, a depuis été érodée. 

Ces réserves exposées, reconnaissons qu’un Lifelover moyen reste quand même toujours supérieur à bien des produits polluant les étals des disquaires (qu'est-ce que c'est ?). Les Suédois qui, comme d’habitude, ne recourent que très rarement à une autre langue que la leur, n’ont rien perdu de leur art de la décrépitude et du malsain. Quelques notes de piano grêles (« Doften, Av Tomhet »), un accord décharné (« Totus Anctus »), des bribes d’un chant plaintif, leur suffisent à faire suinter de leur compositions un fluide visqueux et maladifs, gangrène urbaine pourrissante qui finit par contaminer tout ce qui l’entoure. 

Après plusieurs écoutes décevantes d’où rien ne ressort franchement, si ce n’est la complainte hypnotique « Bitterljuv Kakofoni », aux traits quasi instrumentaux, Sjukdom finit peu à peu par offrir son intimité. On mesure alors que cet album aux teintes terreuses, n’est pas sans charme mais c’est un charme gris, triste et froid. Morne. Dans le bon sens du terme si tant est que celui-ci existe. 

Malgré deux derniers titres qui tiennent plus du remplissage, le menu est émaillé de moments de pure mélancolie (citons « Instrumental Asylum » ou « Expendera » pour faire court) qui lui confèrent une forme de beauté pale et déglinguée. Mais Lifelover a fait tellement mieux par le passé… 7/10
