Aegirson - Sons Of Etheria (2009)

Aegirson est de ces activistes de l’ombre que l’on a envie d’aimer. Pour sa ténacité, sa persévérance (le groupe existe depuis 1996 !); Pour sa passion pour la fantasy et la S.F.. Pour un premier album, Requiem Tenebrae non dénué d’intérêt. Pour son metal hétéroclite, alliage de death atmosphérique, de gothic, de dark…

Seulement voilà, les Français alignent pas mal d’écueils qui paralysent encore trop la production hexagonale. Sons of Etheria le démontre malheureusement. Une pochette assez laide. Ce n’est pas très grave. Une production vierge de puissance et de relief. Ca l’est déjà beaucoup plus. Le groupe a du métier et ne devrait pas se satisfaire d’un fuselage aussi faiblard. Certes, avoir un bon son a un coût mais il faut savoir ce que l’on veut et se donner les moyens d’y parvenir. 

Ces remarques, que l’on pourra juger sévères, énoncées, il faut reconnaître aux Bourguignons une certaine ambition, qu’illustrent aussi bien ce refus d’être inféodé à un seul genre que le choix de mettre en musique un récit de science-fiction qui en vaut bien d’autres et qui se déploie à travers douze titres. Si les premiers d’entre-eux, tels que « Wisful », « Stranger in Myself » (malgré des claviers aux couleurs un peu cheaps), ou "Obscure Destiny" , accrochent assez facilement l’auditeur, la seconde moitié de l’aventure peine à passionner autant. Le disque paraît trop long et un morceau aussi fade que « Cœur battant », lequel démontre que le groupe devrait se contenter de chanter en anglais,  n’aide pas à maintenir l’intérêt. 

Bref, on finit par décrocher et on se dit que ce n’est pas avec ce genre de produits que la France va redorer son blason en matière de metal. Dommage car Aegirson mérite mieux que ce disque, certes carré, bien défendu par des musiciens confirmés, au concept captivant mais par trop maladroit. Ceci étant, Sons of Etheria se laisse écouter sans déplaisir, ce qui n’est déjà pas si mal… 5.5/10

But then, the French line up a lot of pitfalls that paralyze production hex too. Sons of Etheria shows unfortunately. Pouch rather ugly. It is not very serious. Virgin production of power and relief. It already is a lot more. The group of business and should not be satisfied with a fuselage also feeble. Of course, having a good sound at a cost but you must know what you want and have the means to achieve it.

These remarks, as may be deemed serious, set, one must recognize the Burgundians some ambition, illustrated both the refusal to be subservient to one genre that the choice of music to a story by science fiction which is as good as others and that unfolds through twelve tracks. If the first of them, such as "Wisful", "Stranger in Myself" (even colored keyboards a little cheap), or "Dark Destiny", the listener easily catch the second half of the just as much passion for adventure. The disc seems a bit too long and too bland as "Heart beating," which shows that the group should be content to sing in English, does not help to maintain interest.

In short, we end up winning and we say that it is not with this kind of products that France will improve its image in metal. Too bad because Aegirson deserves better than this disc certainly square, well defended by experienced musicians, the concept fascinating but too clumsy. That is, Sons of Etheria is left without listening displeasure, which is not bad ... 5.5/10
