Bien que s’achevant sur deux opus – In Rock We Trust et Down For The Count - de moindre qualité, l’ère courant de 1981 à 1986 correspond à la période dorée de Y&T, celle des hits et des hymnes intemporels qui forment encore aujourd’hui l’essentiel de la setlist de ses concerts. Le départ du batteur historique Leonard Haze, alors remplacé par le futur mercenaire des fûts, Jimmy DeGrasso, ainsi que la signature le liant au puissant Geffen, ouvrent un troisième chapitre dans sa carrière parcourant les années 1987 à 1991, laquelle correspond à son (temporaire) sabordage.
Moins réputée et seulement animée par deux albums studios un peu oubliés aujourd’hui, au détriment de leurs glorieux aînés, cette période n’est pourtant pas à dédaigner et Contagious, le premier d’entre eux, en témoigne. En effet, s’il confirme le virage franchement plus glam/ Hair Metal négocié par ses deux prédécesseurs, comme l’illustre le morceau éponyme ou "L.A. Rocks", bon cru au demeurant, il en gomme par ailleurs le côté par trop lisse et, on peut le dire, un peu niais par moment, qui grevait une bonne partie du menu de Down For The Count.
Surtout, les Américains y renouent avec une inspiration, une énergie et une variété, les brûlots très rock côtoyant ballades et respirations bluesy qui font plaisir à entendre, réussissant une poignée de titres dont certains n’ont (presque) pas rougir de la comparaison avec les classiques du groupe. C’est le cas de "Eye Of A Stranger", à l’entame portant la reconnaissable griffe du guitariste Dave Meniketti et au brillant refrain, cependant que le (trop) court et instrumental "I’ll Cry For You" affirme les tendances bluesy du bonhomme et annonce déjà le méconnu On The Blue Side (1999), lequel le verra se prendre pour le Gary Moore dernière époque, ce dont on ne se plaindra pas. Surtout, Contagious accueille une très belle power-ballade, exercice qui a toujours réussi à Y&T, véritable rampe de lancement pour le jeu flamboyant et chargé de feeling de son incontestable maître des lieux. "Temptation" séduit par sa mélodie et le solo qui la transperce. Mention particulière enfin à "Fight For Your Life" qui paraît vouloir également suivre ce chemin plus émotionnel avant de durcir le ton.
Voilà donc un bilan plutôt positif que tempèrent toutefois d’autres chansons moins notables ("Bodily Harm"…) qui, placées en seconde partie, contribue à déséquilibrer un album malgré tout plutôt agréable et largement supérieur à son aîné de deux ans. Néanmoins, il est évident que la magie auréolant Earthshaker et Black Tiger s’est diluée avec le temps. Grand disque peu connu et injustement boudé à sa sortie, Tenconfirmera d’une part cette inspiration retrouvée toujours si personnelle, et d’autre part, une envie qui n’y est plus, aboutissant en toute logique au split du groupe… 6.5/10 (Music Waves)

Less known and only led by two studio albums almost forgotten today, at the expense of their glorious predecessors, this period is however not to be despised and Contagious, the first of them, attests. While it confirms the shift frankly more glam / Hair Metal negotiated by his two predecessors, as illustrated by the title track or "LA Rocks" good year after all, it also rubber side too smooth , one might say, a bit silly at times, which was charged on much of the menu Down For The Count.
Above all, Americans reconnect with inspiration, energy and variety, biting midges very rock alongside bluesy ballads and breaths that are a pleasure to hear, passing a handful of titles, some of which have (almost) not ashamed of the comparison with the conventional group. This is the case of "Eye Of A Stranger", at the start with the recognizable brand of guitarist Dave Meniketti and brilliant chorus, while the (too) short instrumental "I'll Cry For You" says trends the blues man and announce already the unknown On The Blue Side (1999), which will be taken to the Gary Moore last time, what we will not complain. Especially, Contagious hosts a beautiful power-ballad performance that has always managed to Y & T, a real launching pad for playing flamboyant and feeling responsible for his indisputable master of the house. "Temptation" seduced by the melody and solo pierces. Finally, special mention to "Fight For Your Life" which also appears to want to follow this path before more emotionally tough.
So rather positive than tempered, however, other less notable songs ("Bodily Harm" ...) who placed second part, contributes to unbalance an album still quite pleasant and well over two years her senior. Nevertheless, it is clear that the magic auréolant Earthshaker and Black Tiger has been diluted over time. Large disk unfamiliar and unjustly snubbed at its output, Tenconfirmera firstly found that inspiration always so personal, and secondly, a desire which no longer there, leading logically to split the group ... 6.5/10
